A 12 year old boy made news that was mentioned by Torrill Mortensen. They boy, from Norway, survive a moose attack. He first “yelled at the moose”. He did this to distract the moose away so his sister could get to safety. The moose then attacked the boy, and when he did attack and stood over the boy, the boy feigned death. When asked about it the boy replied, “I just did like you learn at level 30 in World of Warcraft.” This serendipitous transfer to your real life your MMOG experience. I myself, find it hard or at least difficult to believe that things such as Boy Scout merit badges could be earned in World of Warcraft. Or that World of Warcraft would be the optimum way to learn about real world woodland survival skills. Yet, Torrill’s story does lead you to believe that once in a while, transfer can happen in strange moments, and in odd ways. I can think of another example. Let’s say for instance Eve Online. I don’t believe that I’ve learned anything from Eve Online that would make me a real world fortune in real world markets. For instance, as an analogy, an imperfect proxy if you will, for real world situations, I believe the game world of Eve Online might present some thrilling illustrations and examples. It is possible that therein lies the point of transfer for game world MMO’s, (and not simulations). Those direct game experiences might not transfer so well, but the actual experience and agility to form analogies, from the game world, just might. Still, I do know that it is a real live moose, and I am no hunter in the World of Warcraft. But say hypothetically speaking, if these were like that happening in that Vale of….well, perhaps I might…yes, and perhaps I could do something like… Who knows? Just of course hypothetically speaking.
